The main objective of the project is the development of new intumescent coating systems by means of nanoparticles acting not only as fillers, but also as functional and active intumescent components. Besides, scientific objectives can also be defined:
- Chemical modification of inorganic nanoparticles to control the intumescent effect at nanoscale.
- Development of nanocomposites with improved performance regarding the following characteristics:
· Long life products by improving vapour and water barrier properties isolating the more permeable components and disminishing leaching out of low molecular weight moisture sensitive elements.
· Reduction of smoke and toxic gases generation by taking advantage of lamellar structures of nanocomposites.
· Increase of thermal insulation of intumescent coatings in case of fire.
